Abstract

THE EFFECT OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF STEROID-FREE EQUINE FOLLICULAR FLUID (EFF) DURING THE LUTEAL PHASE ON THE OVULATION RATE OF RAMBOUILLET EWES WAS EVALUATED. TWENTY SIX CYCLING EWES PREVIOUSLY SYNCHRONIZED WERE USED. ON THE NINTH DAY OF THE OESTRUS CYCLE (DAY 0 = ESTRUS DAY) EWES WERE ASSIGNED AT RANDOM IN TWO GROUPS. ANIMALS FROM THE TREATED GROUP (N = 13) WERE INTRAVENOUSLY TREATED EVERY 8 H WITH 3ML OF EFF FOR 72 H. EWES FROM THE CONTROL GROUP (N = 13) WERE INJECTED WITH SALINE SOLUTION (SSF) INSTEAD OF THE EFF. ALL EWES WERE TREATED WITH 15MGOF PGF2 AFTER THE LAST TREATMENT WITH EITHER SSF OR EFF. DETECTION OF ESTRUS WAS PERFORMED USING A MALE FITTED WITH AN APRON. OVULATION RATE WAS DETERMINED ON THE SIXTH DAY AFTER ESTRUS BY LAPAROSCOPY COUNTING THE CORPORA LUTEA. THE PROPORTION OF EWES WITH MULTIPLE OR SIMPLE OVULATION, AND THE NUMBER OF OVULATIONS WERE COMPARED USING THE JI SQUARE- AND STUDENT.S .T. TESTS, RESPECTIVELY. BLOOD SAMPLES WERE TAKEN FROM 4 EWES IN THE TREATED GROUP, AND FROM 5 EWES FROM THE CONTROL ONE EVERY 4 HOURS FOR A PERIOD OF 144 H AFTER THE ADMINISTRATION OF EFF. CONCENTRATIONS OFFSHWERE DETERMINED, AND THE RESULTS WERE COMPARED USING THE VARIANCE ANALYSIS. OVULATION RATE WAS HIGHER (P < 0.05) IN TREATED EWES (2.0 ± 0.29) THAN IN THE CONTROL ONES (1.23 ± 0.12). THE PROPORTION OF EWES WITH MULTIPLE OVULATIONS FOR THE TREATED GROUP WAS 69.23%, AND 23.07% FOR THE CONTROL ONE (P < 0.05). CONCENTRATIONS OF FSH WERE NOT STATISTICALLY DIFFERENT BETWEEN GROUPS (P > 0.05). AFTER THE SUSPENSION OF EFF, LEVELS OF FSH DID NOT INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY (P > 0.05). IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE TREATMENT WITH EFF DURING THE LUTEAL PHASE 72 H BEFORE THE APPLICATION OF PGF2 INCREASES THE OVULATION RATE WITHOUT MODIFYING CONCENTRATIONS OF FSH.
