Abstract

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS WERE DETERMINED IN BONE BIOPSIES AND BLOOD OF HEALTHY FATTENED BULLS AND HEALTHY DAIRY COWS, AND DURING SUBCLINICAL METABOLIC OSTEOPATHIES. THE SAMPLE INCLUDED BULLS (N = 143, HOLSTEIN X CZECH SPOTTED BREED) AGED 10 "" 15 MONTHS WITH A BODY WEIGHT OF 300 TO 450 KG AND COWS (N = 118, CZECH SPOTTED BREED) AGED 3 TO 8 YEARS AND 2 TO 20 WEEKS POSTPARTUM. THE FOLLOWING GROUPS WERE FORMED: GROUP I OF BULLS (CONTROL, N = 47) AND GROUP I OF COWS (CONTROL, N = 57), EACH GROUP FROM 4 HERDS INCLUDED HEALTHY ANIMALS WITH BALANCED RATIONS; WITHOUT CLINICAL SIGNS OF OSTEOPATHIES IN OTHER ANIMALS, GROUP II OF BULLS INCLUDED ANIMALS WITHOUT CLINICAL SIGNS OF METABOLIC OSTEOPATHIES (N = 96) PROCEEDING FROM 8 HERDS WITH FREQUENT CASES OF CLINICAL RICKETS (21% TO 50%) IN OTHER ANIMALS; AND GROUP II OF COWS INCLUDED ANIMALS WITHOUT CLINICAL SIGNS OF METABOLIC OSTEOPATHIES (N=61) FROM 5 HERDS, BUT WITH SOME CASES OF GENERALIZED OSTEOPATHIES (10% TO 18%) IN OTHER ANIMALS. RATIONS OF GROUPS II WERE DEFICIENT IN PHOSPHORUS, ADDITIONALLY, COWS OF GROUP II HAD A CALCIUM EXCESS. SAMPLES OF BIOPSIES FROM THE ILIAC CREST AND BLOOD WERE TAKEN ONCE FROM ALL ANIMALS. BLOOD CONCENTRATIONS OF CA2, INORGANIC P AND ACID-BASE VALUES WERE NO SIGNIFICANT FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF SUBCLINICAL METABOLIC OSTEOPATHIES. SIGNIFICANT DECREASES (P < 0.05) WERE FOUND IN BIOPSIES REGARDING ASH DRY MATTER (FFDM) AND ASH WEIGHT/CM3 SPONGY IN ANIMALS OF GROUPS II IN COMPARISON WITH GROUPS I. IN BULLS OF GROUP II SUBCLINICAL RICKETS WAS DIAGNOSED AS ASH WEIGHT/G FFDM DECREASED. OSTEOMALATIC AND OSTEOPOROTIC SUBCLINICAL PROCESSES WERE DIAGNOSED IN COWS OF GROUP II, AS ASH/G FFDM AND PER CM3 OF SPONGY WAS DECREASED. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF BONE BIOPSIES DEMONSTRATED THE APPLICABILITY ON THE DIAGNOSIS OF SUBCLINICAL METABOLIC OSTEOPATHIES IN BOVINES.
