Abstract

IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF A PROBIOTIC (BACILLUS TOYOI 1010 SPORES/G) ON PERFORMANCE OF BROILER CHICKS, TWO EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT. IN THE FIRST EXPERIMENT, 640 NON SEXED ONE DAY OLD ARBOR ACRES BROILER CHICKS WERE USED. A FACTORIAL DESIGN 2 X 2 WAS EMPLOYED; THE FIRST FACTOR WAS THE LEVEL OF THE PROBIOTIC (0 AND 50 PPM), AND THE SECOND FACTOR WAS THE FEEDING SYSTEM WITH BOTH RESTRICTED AND NONRESTRICTED ACCESS TIME TO FEED FROM 8 TO 42 DAYS OF AGE. RESULTS OBTAINED AT 49 DAYS OF AGE WERE DIFFERENT FOR WEIGHT GAIN (P<0.05). THE ADDITION OF THE PROBIOTIC SHOWED A POSITIVE EFFECT (2 409 VS 2 344 G). THERE WERE DIFFERENCES IN WEIGHT GAIN ON THE FEEDING SYSTEMS IN CHICKS FED AD LIBITUM, AND PRESENTED BETTER WEIGHT GAIN THAN WITH THE RESTRICTED FEEDING ONE (2 418 VS 2 336 G). THERE WAS ALSO A DIFFERENCE IN FEED CONSUMPTION (P<0.05) FOR THE FEEDING SYSTEMS WITH A HIGHER FEED CONSUMPTION IN THE CHICKS FED AD LIBITUM (4 974 VS 4 733 G). THERE WERE NO DIFFERENCES FOUND IN FEED CONVERSION (P<0.05) FOR BOTH AD LIBITUM (2.08) AND RESTRICTED SYSTEMS (2.06), NEITHER FOR THE PROBIOTIC ADDITION (2.06, 2.06). TOTAL MORTALITY AND ASCITES SINDROME MORTALITY (AS) WAS HIGHER (P<0.05) IN THE BIRDS UNDER THE AD LIBITUM FEEDING SYSTEM THAN THOSE UNDER THE FEED RESTRICTION (9.55, 2.45, 4.52 AND 1.45% RESPECTIVELY). THERE WAS AN EFFECT (P<0.05) WITH THE PROBIOTIC ADDITION IN AS (0.90 VS 5.07%) WITH LESS MORTALITY. FOR THE SECOND EXPERIMENT, 360 ONE OLD DAY ARBOR ACRES MALE BROILERS WERE DIVIDED INTO FOUR TREATMENTS WITH THREE REPETITIONS OF 30 CHICKENS EACH. A TOTALLY RANDOMIZED DESIGN WAS EMPLOYED BY USING SEVERAL LEVELS OF THE PROBIOTIC (0, 50, 100 AND 150 PPM). RESULTS FOR WEIGHT GAIN AT 49 DAYS SHOWED A LINEAR EFFECT (P<0.05) WITH THE PROBIOTIC ADDITION (2 258, 2 321, 2 376 AND 2 433 G). FOR FEED CONSUMPTION (4 648, 4 802, 4 782 AND 4 843 G), FEED CONVERSION (2.06, 2.07, 2.01 AND 1.99), TOTAL MORTALITY (10.4, 7.5, 9.6 AND 5.4%) AND AS MORTALITY (6.43, 3.20, 6.43 AND 3.20%) NO STATISTICAL DIFFERENCES (P>0.05) WERE FOUND AMONG TREATMENTS. RESULTS IN THIS RESEARCH SHOWED A GROWTH EFFECT AND A REDUCTION OF AS MORTALITY DUE TO THE PROBIOTIC ADDITION.
